Tor.com Publishing is proud to announce that consulting editor Ann VanderMeer has acquired Mandelbrot the Magnificent, a historical fantasy novella, from author Liz Ziemska.
The novella presents a fantastical version of the life of Benoit Mandelbrot as he and his family flee the spreading threat of the Nazis, from the Warsaw ghetto to Paris to rural France. As antisemitism encroaches ever closer on Mandelbrot’s life, he relies more and more heavily on the magic of mathematics, through which he may find salvation for his family and himself.
Liz Ziemska is a graduate of the Bennington Writing Seminars. Her work has appeared in Tin House, Interfictions:2, Strange Horizons, Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, The Pushcart Prize XLI, and has been nominated for a Shirley Jackson Award. She lives in Los Angeles, and is represented by Renée Zuckerbrot of Lippincott Massie McQuilkin. Liz had this to say about the sale:
Happy to be working with Tor.com under the helm of Ann Vandermeer.
Ann VanderMeer had this to say:
I am happy to announce the forthcoming novella “Mandelbrot the Magnificent” by Liz Ziemska. This story hits all my soft spots — science, religion, math and mysticism plus just a damn fine story overall. Can’t wait to share it with all of you.
Mandelbrot the Magnificent is expected to publish in 2018.
